Diplomat’s Story: Our Home in Flint, MI

July 26, 2012

At Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy, we believe that in order to look forward, you have to take a look back and honor your history. Our corporate headquarters, located in Flint, Michigan is an essential part of our story. In the video above, Phil Hagerman explains: “We’ve always had great roots in Genesee County and as the company started to expand… we believed that this community was the right place to stay.”

The history of our company began in 1973, when Dale Hagerman opened a franchise of Ideal Pharmacy in Flint, Michigan. Two years later, just before his son Phil graduated from college, Dale bought the store from Ideal Pharmacy in order to launch Diplomat Pharmacy. Phil Hagerman would later come to join the Diplomat team and build the company up into the national specialty pharmacy it is today.

We’re proud of our national distribution and are glad to be able to help people across the United States obtain the specialty medications they need. When it was time to choose a new location for our corporate headquarters, though, it was important for us to honor our roots and find a location in Flint, Michigan.

Michigan has a storied history of automotive and industrial innovation, and Flint is no exception to that rule. General Motors (GM) was born in Flint in 1908 and the company would eventually play a significant role in the history. The United Automobile Workers’ 1936-1937 successful sit-down strike (click the link for more information about the strike!) ushered in a new era of labor unions.

Despite the 2009 GM bankruptcy and the struggles facing Michigan and the national automotive industry, many people believed that there was still hope on the horizon for the beleaguered state – including us. In December 2010, Diplomat moved its corporate headquarters into the Fisher Body Flint Plant No. 1 – that same location where, more than 70 years later, auto workers fought for their rights.

There’s room in our 500,000 square foot site for us to ensure that all of our patients’ medications get the special handling and storage they need. And now, instead of rolling convertibles and SUVs off of assembly lines, we’re packaging, distributing, and shipping important medications for a variety of disease areas, including cancers, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and more.

Our new headquarters’ size also gives us an opportunity to continue to grow. So far in 2012, we’ve had a 50% increase in revenue when compared to the same period in 2011. Also, since this video was first released in October 2011, we’ve grown our employee base from 565 to 714 – an increase of 26%! Phil Hagerman stated in June 2012 that Diplomat plans to hire between 100 and 150 people by the end of 2012. By the end of next year, 2013, we could add as many as 300 new employees to our corporate headquarters and our branches in Illinois, Florida, and California. This projected growth means that we’ll be in a great position to continue to provide the best possible service to our patients throughout the United States.
